9x The Hague’s ‘bakkie pleur’

The best coffee spots in The Hague? We've got them for you! In our latest blog, we'll tell you where to find them.

Wednesday 8 May 2024

The expression a ‘Haags bakkie’ (The Hague cup of coffee) isn’t particularly positive… Traditionally, it refers to a sparingly filled cup of coffee, for which The Hague was known. Fortunately, nowadays, the people of The Hague are much more hospitable, and delicious, generously filled cups are served throughout the city. With all those great coffee shops spread across The Hague, it’s sometimes hard to choose. That’s why we’re here to guide you in this blog with the nine tastiest ‘Haagse bakkies’. And there’s certainly no talk of half cups with our The Hague treasures. They pour good cups, extra strong or with milk, and always with a generous portion of love!

JoeJoe

The coffee shop with the cutest name in The Hague: JoeJoe! A true Specialty Coffeebar from our familiar Roast Factory. And the location is just as appealing. JoeJoe is situated in a historic building in the city center where Reuser en Smulders (the coffee, tea, and tobacco trade) was located from 1920, a household name in The Hague! The locals are thrilled to have the scent of fresh coffee back in the air. And so are we!

Sam Sam

Double names do well at Haagse Schatten, because we also love to grab a delicious fresh cup at Sam Sam on Noordeinde. Sometimes just a quick to-go, but we prefer to hang out here because the menu is also quite impressive!

FOAM

A bit further down the road, in Frederikstraat, you’ll find The Hague treasure FOAM. Not only the place to be for a fully plant-based menu, but also a lovely spot for a cappuccino with (yes!) oat milk.

De Zelfspot

Prefer to enjoy a Hague cup of  coffee near the beach? In Scheveningen, you’ll find De Zelfspot. A cozy meeting place and café in a charming corner building on Badhuisstraat. Sink into one of the comfortable couches or take a seat at the communal table. It’s perfect for people-watching here.

The Shore

We’re staying a bit longer in our lovely Scheveningen. But this time, right on the beach. Because the best cups are enjoyed with your feet in the sand at our treasure The Shore. Go doubly sustainable and have your Haagse Schatten to-go cup filled up!

Café LOFT

One of the most unique places to enjoy your morning coffee: in the old Jerusalem church on Pomonaplein in the Vruchtenbuurt. Here you’ll find Café LOFT, where good food, yoga, and art come together! When the first rays of sunshine appear, it’s also delightful to relax outside on one of the benches against the church wall.

Pompke

Right next to the Scheveningse Bosjes and the perfect pit stop during your forest walk or bike ride: Pompke! We’ll warn you though: once you sit down here and see the delicious treats you can order at the ‘hatch,’ chances are your walk or bike ride won’t be resumed quickly…

The Chocolate Shop

At The Hague treasure The Chocolate Shop, you not only get the tastiest chocolates but also a nice cup of coffee. And coffee and chocolate happen to be a very fine combination… Read more about it in the blog we wrote about the ‘food pairing’ workshop.

Brute Bonen

At Haagse Schatten, we like to take you off the beaten path. To the places you might not easily find at first but are worth the detour. Espressobar Brute Bonen is one of those places. Off to the Haagse Binckhorst, because we promise you: it’s a green oasis of tranquility there!

At all these The Hague treasures, you can pay for your ‘bakkie’ with your Haagse Schatten gift card. Like the idea? Then consider gifting it to a coffee-loving friend too! At Brute Bonen and De Zelfspot, you can even buy it right at the counter, as they are physical points of sale for the gift card.
