In the intense and challenging times that families of sick children endure, the Ronald McDonald House has one primary goal: to bring as many families together as possible, in a pleasant atmosphere, in a welcoming place, located within a wing of the hospital. Run by passionate volunteers, the house ensures that families can be together outside the sterile hospital rooms.
For some parents, constantly commuting to a hospital has unfortunately become part of their daily routine. For all these parents of children in the Juliana Children’s Hospital (JKZ), there is the Ronald McDonald House The Hague. A second home, managed by volunteers, where parents can briefly escape the hectic demands of the day, while still being close to their sick child.
Sick children feel better when their parents, brothers, and sisters are nearby. Parents can better endure the caregiving with a place to rest close to their sick child. Because when your entire world is turned upside down by illness or caregiving, being together as a family is what matters most.
A Warm Home Away from Home
The Ronald McDonald House is a place where parents (and siblings) of sick children admitted to the Juliana Children’s Hospital can stay, eat, and live. It accommodates up to six families. In the house, they have their own bedroom and bathroom and can make use of the shared living room, the green balcony with a wide view, and the kitchen, where volunteers even cook for them once a week!
Although the Ronald McDonald House is located in the Juliana Children’s Hospital, the moment you step through the doors, you truly enter another world. It offers the luxury of a hotel with the comfort of home, a place where you can simply “be.”
Treasure behind the treasure
Nadeche, Joyce, and Rachel take care of fundraising, facilities, and communication, and together with a team of 140 amazing volunteers, they run the house: “No day is the same here, and every day something happens that leaves an impression. When your child is in the hospital, everyday tasks become a challenge, and small gestures become special. We work with 140 volunteers who keep the Ronald McDonald House and the living rooms in the children’s wards running every day. It’s an absolute honor. We receive no government support and rely entirely on donors, sponsors, and volunteers. So, it’s fantastic that over the years, we’ve received a lot of donated gift cards from The Hague treasures!”
Haven’t found a use for your gift card yet? We can confidently say it will always find a great home here. You can send your gift card to them or drop it off in person. The full amount of the Haagse Schatten gift card will be donated by us to the Ronald McDonald House in The Hague.
The Ronald McDonald House receives no government subsidies and is therefore entirely dependent on donors, sponsors, and volunteers. A night’s stay costs €75, of which parents pay €15. The rest comes from these donations. Don’t have a Haagse Schatten gift card but still want to contribute? Check out the Ronald McDonald website for other ways to help.
