In this monthly column, we spotlight one of our entrepreneurs each time. This time, we’re asking a few questions to the coolest record spinner in The Hague: Perry. Care to read along?
Perry – CrazyHorse Recordstore
In the beautiful monumental building at Prinsegracht 8, there’s always something buzzing. Here you’ll find the cultural hub GR8. On the lower floors is a true The Hague treasure: CrazyHorse Recordstore. This is the place to go for golden oldies, unique finds, and names you’ve never heard of before as well as the latest releases and big-name artists. The selection changes every week, so there’s always a new chance to discover something special. Want to listen first to see if a record suits your taste? No problem! They’re more than happy to put it on for you.
How did you end up at GR8 with your record store?
My record store started out very small on the Zuidwal as Tiny Musicstore, and not long after that it grew into The Recordcorner on the corner of Boekhorststraat. The move to my current location on Prinsegracht is actually partly thanks to Majel Blonden, director of PAARD, who was working on the development of GR8 at the time. During one of our conversations, we immediately saw great opportunities for a record store in that spot, right next to the pop venue PAARD.
Over time, the building has grown into a cultural hub with special residents such as De Betovering, Girls in Woods and designers Allsizes. Concerts and intimate performances also take place on the in-house stage. Truly a (cultural) place to cherish!
CrazyHorse Recordstore, how did you come up with the name?
I have a habit of connecting the name of my store to the place or space I’m in. After some puzzling, and with help from my colleague John van Schaik, we came up with CrazyHorse, one of my favourite bands and at the same time a strong reference to our neighbours and ‘partners in crime’, PAARD (Horse in Dutch).
We always say: a The Hague treasure is worth cycling out of your way for. What do you happily get on your bike for?
Not right around the corner, but definitely worth the bike ride: Het Restaurant van Pluk! A wonderfully relaxed spot, completely away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
