At Music Monkeys, it’s all about making music together, exploring, and having fun. What started with just a few classes for toddlers has grown into a warm, musical space where children aged 0 to 7 (and their parents) can enjoy lessons, workshops, and even a little music shop of their own. We spoke with Josette about her love for music, the growth of Music Monkeys, and her dream to introduce even more children in The Hague to the power of sound.
We always say, “A true Haagse schat is worth going out of your way for.” Where do you love to go out of your way for?
A place that has just that special something you won’t find anywhere else. A beautiful view that lets you daydream while enjoying a lovely cup of tea or a glass of wine. A spot where my loyal four-legged friend is welcome, too. Staff who are clearly right where they belong. (Doesn’t all have to be in one place 😉)
How did you get started with Music Monkeys? Where were you then, and where are you now?
I actually rolled into it when a friend asked if I wanted to teach music classes for toddlers at her music school. I loved it so much that I decided to specialize in this field, taking several training courses abroad. I wanted to create a musical place where young children and their families are at the heart of everything. And that’s how Music Monkeys was born! By now, I’m joined by an amazing team of teachers. Together, we offer group lessons for children aged 0 to 7, seven days a week, as well as private lessons for older siblings and parents. We even have a shop with instruments and music materials specially designed for young children.
What should people really know about your business?
That we do this work with so much love. We want to make music accessible to all young children. That’s why we collaborate with the Ooievaarspas and Stichting Leergeld (organizations that support families financially). We also teach at preschools in every neighborhood of The Hague, especially in areas where music isn’t a given.
What are your dreams, goals, or plans for the future?
A new, larger location, so we can offer even more musical experiences for young children, like baby concerts. And… a second location! We’re currently quite central in the Zeeheldenkwartier, but I’d love to open another space in a completely different part of The Hague. Always with our main goal in mind: making music accessible to every child.
