Treasure behind the treasure: Little Green Shop

In this monthly feature, we shine a spotlight on one of our The Hague treasures. This time it’s Little Green Shop!

Friday 10 October 2025

In the heart of the Zeeheldenkwartier, you’ll find Little Green Shop — the green oasis created by Barro (and formerly also Zoë), where plants, vintage finds, and sustainable home inspiration come together. What once started as a cozy coffee bar has grown into a beloved spot full of creativity, greenery, and a wonderful atmosphere. Last weekend, they celebrated their anniversary — a perfect moment to look back and ahead. We asked Barro how it all began and what his dreams are for the future.

We always say, “A Haagse Schat is worth going out of your way for.” What makes people go out of their way to visit you?

For many, it’s without a doubt the kokedama: a striking, living gift that instantly catches the eye. It’s a little piece of green art that brings calm and beauty into any home. People are always curious: “What on earth is that?” And that’s exactly what I love about it. It’s not just a plant, but a small work of art that adds something special to your interior. People also come for the atmosphere, to step away from the daily rush for a moment, surrounded by greenery and beautiful treasures.

This year marks your anniversary. Tell us more!

Zoë and I always wanted to do something that truly made us happy. On October 1st, 2015, we opened Bar & Zo: a cozy coffee bar filled with second-hand gems, named after the two of us. We wanted to create a place where people feel welcome, enjoy a good cup of coffee, and discover something beautiful. When my love for plants grew and started taking over the shop, we transformed it into The Little Green Shop: an oasis of plants, pots, and sustainable interior finds in the heart of the Zeeheldenkwartier. The best part? We’ve grown together with the neighborhood. We found each other… and it still feels just right.

What are your plans for the future?

Ten years of The Little Green Shop… if it’s up to me, I’d love to stay here forever. This little corner of The Hague feels like home – it’s a lovely neighborhood with kind people, without the city rush. In the coming years, I mostly want to build on what we already have. I’d love to host more workshops, because these days people are looking for an experience, not just a purchase. Creating something together or learning about plants is so much fun. And yes, one day I hope to sell my kokedamas online, so they can find their way into even more homes across the Netherlands. But that’s a story for another time 🙂
