Vintage treasure hunting

If you thought we were good at treasure hunting, then you haven't met Joke yet. In her store Sprinkelhop, you'll find the most beautiful interior items in The Hague.

Monday 22 April 2024

In the charming Weimarstraat, there’s one storefront where you always stop to admire all the beautiful items displayed. We’re talking about Sprinkelhop, the vintage design paradise of The Hague. Step inside and immerse yourself in a fairy tale world full of dazzling lamps, shiny mirrors, and gleaming brass. In this The Hague hotspot, you truly experience the adult version of ‘feeling like a kid in a candy store’.

All these beautiful items are curated by owner Joke. She tirelessly searches for the most stunning vintage finds and has an eye for spotting the most beautiful gems among the clutter. She developed this keen eye through years of thrifting. With her van, she traversed the entire country in search of true treasures. Now, running a business like Sprinkelhop involves so much more, so she has people with equally good eyes who scour the most beautiful furniture and accessories for your interior in both the Netherlands and abroad. All these found treasures are lovingly refurbished and cleaned by hand before finding their place in that lovely store with its beautiful storefront on the Weimar.

Dream? Dare to do!

A small piece of wisdom from Joke: “if you have a dream, you have to do everything yourself to make it come true.” And she speaks from experience. Not content with her job in fast fashion, with fixed hours and no sustainability, she changed course at the age of thirty. A summer working on the beach (at one of our other The Hague treasures, De Kwartel!) with her feet in the sand allowed her to reconnect with herself and gave her plenty of time to think about the next step.

Since this work was mostly in the evenings, Joke suddenly had a lot of free time during the day, so she started thrifting. And she turned out to have a talent for it! Before she knew it, her own house was filled with gems. And everything she found that didn’t fit in her own house, she decided to sell on Marktplaats. Because that was an easy first step.

As the beach season came to an end, not only was there a new hobby, but also a new plan: buying, refurbishing, and reselling unique vintage interior items. And of course, that was much more fun from her own webshop! There was no half-heartedness, but it was full steam ahead right away. Joke even let her friends know that she wouldn’t be joining them for concerts and restaurants for a while… because she wanted to invest all her attention, time, and money in her dream. Now, that’s determination!

The webshop quickly proved to be a great success, but all that shipping from home was less enjoyable. Actually, having a shop of her own where all those beautiful items could have space and people could just come by themselves would be even more fun, wouldn’t it? And by daring to take this step and just doing it, an even bigger dream came true. A perfect place just outside the city center in the emerging Weimarstraat with enough space to come and go with beautiful vintage items.

And so we learn: if you really want something, you have to go all out for it. Because if you don’t do it now, then when? And it’s actually the same with buying vintage… If you don’t buy that beautiful treasure now, there’s a good chance it’ll be gone tomorrow. And you’ll probably regret it. So, it’s now or never. Onward to Sprinkelhop!

Sleek and playful

So, what can we find at Sprinkelhop? It’s a colorful collection of teak wood cabinets and dressers, crystal tableware, porcelain figurines, beautiful vases, and gleaming mirrors. We also spot the iconic Italian Murano teardrop lamps with hand-blown drops. There’s a lot of glass and brass in Hollywood Regency style and items from the sixties and seventies. Trendy Danish, Swedish, German, and Dutch design gems that are given a second life here.

The vintage finds are cleaned, tightened, and refurbished by Joke and the other handy Harrys in the store themselves. Even the lamps are inspected and, if necessary, fitted with new switches. Those ladies really know how to do it all themselves!

Dream big

Joke continues to fulfill her dreams and steadily grows further. With a few lovely new girls on staff who can keep the store running smoothly. Sprinkelhop has recently extended its opening hours to include Tuesdays. And secretly, an expansion of the store is also a wish… It’s a shame to leave behind that beautiful vintage find simply because it doesn’t fit in the store!

A day in The Hague? Then you can’t miss this The Hague treasure. Because it’s quite clear by now that Sprinkelhop is one of the nicest shops in The Hague. Even if you don’t need anything new for your home, it’s always delightful to browse and gather inspiration in all the cozy corners. And if you’re not into vintage interior, Joke’s little brown dog Ted alone is worth a visit.

Daily updates of newly found vintage gems are posted on Instagram. So, be sure to follow Sprinkelhop!

Prefer to come vintage interior shopping yourself? Sprinkelhop is open on Tuesday and from Friday to Sunday from 12-5pm. And don’t forget to bring your Haagse Schatten gift card, because you can also redeem it at this The Hague treasure. Consider gifting it as well. Every euro spent with the voucher goes directly to local entrepreneurs like Joke, who dare to dream and pour their heart and soul into their dream every day.
