Bouldering is booming! Read all about this popular rope-free climbing sport and discover the two most exciting bouldering gyms in The Hague in this blog.

Wednesday 14 May 2025

Bouldering is climbing in its purest form. No ropes, no harness, and nothing to catch you—except a big crash mat in case you lose your grip. It’s just you and a wall full of colourful holds. Two bouldering gyms in The Hague have earned the title of The Hague treasure: Boulderhal De Campus and Boulderhal Walhalla. Whether you’re trying it for the first time, have been scrambling up routes for years, or are simply looking for an active and fun group outing or party—these places have something for everyone.

Start bouldering

Curious—just like us—about why this sport is becoming more and more popular? Just drop by and give it a go! For example, at Boulderhal Walhalla, you’ll get a free introduction. You only pay the entrance fee and, if you don’t have your own, a pair of climbing shoes. Need a bit more help getting started? You can also take a trial lesson with one of the instructors. Before you know it, you’ll be ready for your first real solo bouldering session. And trust us—within 15 minutes you’ll be climbing your first route and discovering just how addictive and fun bouldering really is.

Looking for a real head start? The ‘Start to Boulder’ course is perfect for beginners who want to learn proper technique, movement, and safety from the get-go. In four lessons of 90 minutes, you’ll build a strong foundation and be ready to take your climbing to new heights.

Bouldering in the Open Air

At Boulderhal De Campus, you can also learn the basics of bouldering—on walls up to 4.5 metres high. Thanks to the thick crash mats, it’s all completely safe. The boulder problems—that’s what seasoned climbers call the routes—are divided into nine colours, each representing a different level of difficulty. So there’s always a colour that suits your level!

And here’s the best part: when the sun is out, you can climb outside in De Campus’s spacious garden. They’ve built over 200 m² of climbing walls outdoors. With summer just around the corner, that’s not a bad place to spend an afternoon.
