Luckily, there’s a top chef in the kitchen. Once the chef of (ex-The Hague treasure) Capriole Café and the legendary Hotel Des Indes. In other words: this chef knows exactly what he’s doing.

Alongside classics like Coq au vin and Toast Cannibale, you’ll also find surprising vegan dishes. Ever tried ‘scallops’ made from dune foot mushrooms? There’s something here for everyone!

Restored international flair

The building that houses Café Nationaal has a long and rich history. This national monument, located on the corner of Prinsegracht and Boekhorststraat, dates back to the 17th century and has served over the years as both a shop and a beer and coffee house. Around 1900, that beer and coffee house was given the name Café Nationaal.

In recent years, the building stood empty — a shame for such a beautiful and central location! So it was a stroke of luck that the current team, in search of the perfect spot for a new Belgian café, stumbled upon this exact place. They restored its old-world charm and proudly revived the historic name.
