A wonderful weekend in The Hague

A weekend in The Hague is always a good idea. In this blog, we’ll share tips on the best restaurants, shopping streets, and the city's hidden gardens.

Wednesday 14 August 2024

To start with, one should choose a delightful hotel in a prime location: La Paulowna Boutique Hotel. This hotel is located in the heart of the trendy Zeeheldenkwartier, with Piet Heinstraat and Prins Hendrikstraat just a stone’s throw away. From this base, you can easily walk to The Hague’s hotspots and enjoy a wonderfully relaxing weekend getaway.

And of course, we at Haagse Schatten are more than happy to share these hotspots with you:

Prins Hendrikstraat is full of hidden The Hague treasures. This is definitely the place to start your weekend in The Hague. With plenty of lunch spots and boutiques, you could easily spend quite some time here. The charming Prins Hendrikplein is also worth a visit. Locals affectionately call this square the ‘Turtle Square,’ and after your visit, you’ll probably guess why!

We want to give you two must-see tips in the overwhelmingly cozy Zeeheldenkwartier:

Little Green Shop

A place packed with plants in matching pots, beautiful home accessories, and vintage finds. It’s a store that will make you want to buy everything, and it’s hard to leave empty-handed. What makes this urban green shop even more unique? In the backyard of Little Green Shop, you’ll find a genuine greenhouse full of beautiful (indoor) plants, all lovingly cared for by owners Barro and Zoë.

Achtung!

With not one but two stores within a twenty-meter radius, you can’t miss the ladies of Achtung! At Achtung! Baby, you can shop for the cutest second-hand children’s clothes. At Achtung! Lady, you’ll find something for yourself. This isn’t just any second-hand women’s clothing. They’re quite picky here, and not just anything makes it onto the racks.

In addition to second-hand clothing, they also have really fun accessories. Not all are second-hand, but they are all handmade right here in The Hague! And it’s always nice, right, to treat yourself to a local gift?

Watching the locals at Bistro Jules

At Bistro Jules, you can stop by from early morning until late at night. Take a seat in the cozy French garden, flip through a newspaper, and enjoy watching the people of The Hague as they stroll and cycle by.

When it’s time for lunch, you can indulge in your love for French cuisine. How about a French pain and a hearty salad? Craving something warm? Go for the croquettes au fromage or the boeuf. Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed to enjoy it!

And what’s a French lunch without a glass of wine? Luckily, they know their wine here too…

Strolling through the Weimar

The Weimarstraat is slowly becoming one of the most vibrant streets in The Hague. With dozens of charming shops, cozy cafes, and coffee spots, and (thankfully!) still plenty of authentic businesses. Foodies will feel right at home here, as you’ll find delicacies from all over the world. Grab a treat and relax on a bench at the equally delightful Regentesseplein.

The Weimarstraat is also packed with The Hague treasures, including these two unique home decor stores:

Studio Limonada

Here, you can shop for unique handmade lamps in the brightest colors and luxurious fabrics. Give your home and mood a boost by stepping into Studio Limonada.

The founder of this amazing shop and studio is the creative and entrepreneurial Ysabel. This native of The Hague spends every day doing what makes her happy, and it shows in both her and Studio Limonada.

What started with making one lamp a day in her grandmother’s attic has grown into her own shop and studio in a corner building on Weimarstraat, where orders come in from all over the world. Even on the dreariest day—speaking from experience—you’ll leave this place with a big smile and a sunny, summer feeling.

Sprinkelhop

In the Weimarstraat, there’s one window display that always makes you stop and marvel at the beautiful items showcased. That’s at number 19, at Sprinkelhop: The Hague’s vintage design paradise.

If you think we’re good at treasure hunting, you haven’t met Joke yet. In her shop, Sprinkelhop, you’ll find the most beautiful home decor items in The Hague.

Step inside and feel as though you’ve entered a fairy tale world full of stunning lamps, gleaming mirrors, and shining brass. This The Hague treasure truly offers the grown-up version of feeling like a kid in a candy store.

Rechtstreex from The Hague

At Rechtstreex in Weimarstraat, you’ll find fresh products from farmers in our own The Hague region! They are dedicated to making a short food supply chain accessible, offering fair prices for everyone and access to (seasonal) food that’s carefully produced by local farmers and artisans.

Vegetables, fruit, butter, cheese, and eggs—they have it all. But also local chocolate, beers, and other treats. Perfect as a The Hague souvenir or a gift to take home!

Enjoy a good brew

A shop full of coffee and tea, that’s Kali Tengah in Weimarstraat. As soon as you step through the door, you can feel the passion of the owner, Marnix, for quality products. In his cozy shop, he offers more than 90 types of tea, specialty coffee, and fine chocolate. Of course, you can take your favorite selections home, but you can also sit down and enjoy a lovingly made cup of coffee right there!

Little Miss Sangria Den Haag restaurants

Cheers! To The Hague!

Stroll down the stately Regentesselaan towards Reinkenstraat. A charming street in the Duinoord district of The Hague. This is where you’ll find Little Miss Sangria, a hidden treasure of The Hague. Trust us, this is where you want to end your weekend in The Hague. It’s like a little slice of Spain in the city! Order one of the delicious homemade sangrias and have the table filled with Mediterranean snacks and tapas! If that doesn’t make for a cozy evening…

Wander back to La Paulowna along de Laan van Meerdervoort, which at 5,800 meters is the longest avenue in the Netherlands. Don’t forget to slip into Sunny Court at this little inlet.

This inner garden was once a tennis park but is now a green city oasis where the entire neighborhood can relax as long as the sun is up.
