Up for an active day in The Hague, filled with scenic views, hidden treasures and tasty food and drinks along the way?
Hop on your bike and ride a 30 kilometre loop full of Haagse Schatten (The Hague Treasures). Starting point: Den Haag Central Station. Ending point? Also Den Haag Central, but with a full stomach and a head full of impressions.

From the station, head southeast down Binckhorstlaan. Welcome to the Binck! Once a grey industrial area, now a buzzing neighbourhood in transformation. Since 2016, the Binckhorst has been evolving into a lively urban district to live, work and relax. Along the way you’ll see industrial buildings covered in street art, creative hubs and trendy cafés — a perfect spot to experience The Hague’s urban edge.

A bit further on, along the Vliet canal, you’ll find the charming Spijshuisje. This former bridge keeper’s house is now a cosy little coffee spot and of course a true The Hague treasure. Order a fresh cup of coffee, pair it with homemade cake from the owner and settle in on a bench by the water. Watch the boats glide by and spot the rides of Familiepark Drievliet twirling in the distance.

Not far from here lies Oud-Rijswijk, a historic corner of The Hague with tons of character. Rijswijk’s roots go all the way back to the 12th century. The area blossomed in the 17th and 18th centuries, when wealthy citizens of The Hague built their country estates here. Wander the streets and admire the Art Nouveau, Neo-Renaissance and Hague School architecture from 1900 to 1940.

Worked up an appetite after all that sightseeing? Take a seat at Bistro Le Petit Chef. This The Hague Treasure is known for its French cuisine and warm, cosy atmosphere. You’ll feel like you’re in France, dining the proper way: leisurely, with love and maybe even a glass of wine 😉 After all, you’re on a bike…

Franse Bistro le petit chef Rijswijk

After that delicious lunch at Le Petit Chef, the route continues through Laak, a neighbourhood bursting with cultural diversity. You will find shops and eateries from all over the world including Syrian, Surinamese and Polish. A colourful mix that gives the area its vibrant, multicultural feel.

Near Moerwijk Station, cycle under the railway and give a wave to The New Farm, a creative hub that also houses the Haagse Schatten HQ. Continue your ride along the Soestdijksekade with the green expanse of Zuiderpark on your left. Follow the Volendamlaan for a bit before joining the Oude Haagweg, heading straight for one of The Hague’s greenest gems: Madestein.

In Madestein you will find Het Restaurant van Pluk, a cosy spot surrounded by nature, perfect for a relaxing break. You can spot animals, take a stroll through the Heemtuin or join creative activities like crafting afternoons or insect hunts. The enthusiastic owners are full of playful and sustainable ideas.

And then, not much further to the sea. Time for a swim and a well-earned drink at Kijkduin beach. Make a stop at one of our Hague beach treasures such as BLOW Beach House or Suiderstrand and recharge after the longest stretch of the Haagse Schatten route.

After the beach at Kijkduin, one of the most beautiful parts of the route awaits you: cycling through the dunes of Westduinpark. Leave the city behind for a moment and enjoy the peaceful nature and fresh sea air. Before you know it, you are rolling back into The Hague.

Once out of the dunes, turn right onto the Houtrustweg and follow the road straight along the water. Then turn left onto the Laan van Meerdervoort, known as one of the longest avenues in the Netherlands. As you weave through the city streets, keep heading in the direction of Den Haag Central Station.

Not far from the station you will find the perfect final stop: the lovely terrace of Baardman. Sit back, put your feet up and enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious Mediterranean meal. A perfect ending to a day full of Hague Treasures and unique spots around the city — and who knows, we might be back soon with the next Haagse Schatten bike route. Until the next discovery!

Don’t forget to bring your Haagse Schatten gift card on this bike adventure. Or surprise a Hague-based friend, colleague, uncle or aunt with one.
