Now that the sun is starting to show itself a bit more often, we know what time it is: time for a good cup of coffee outdoors. The first rays of sunshine call for settling down on a great terrace, face in the sun, a proper coffee (or something else, of course) in front of you. Preferably surrounded by greenery, water or even a bit of forest. Where to go? Here are a few unique The Hague treasures:
‘t Spijshuisje
Sometimes you just discover one of those places. The kind you immediately want to recommend to all your friends, but secretly also want to keep to yourself. On the edge of The Hague, right between Rijswijk and Voorburg, you’ll find this former bridge keeper’s house from 1892, set alongside the Vliet canal. Back in the day, a bridge keeper operated the Nieuwe Tolbrug here, a drawbridge for cyclists and pedestrians. Today, it’s a tiny kiosk where you can stop for a coffee and something sweet.
Thrive Coffee House
The name says it all: thrive means to flourish and that’s exactly what you’ll do here, on a sunny corner in the Geuzenkwartier. If you ask us, Thrive has one of the best terraces in The Hague. And one of the best cups of coffee. And some of the nicest owners, too. Add it all up, and you’ve got yourself a true local treasure.
Bistro LOFT
Easily one of the most unique spots to enjoy your morning coffee: right by the old Jerusalem Church at Pomonaplein in the Vruchtenbuurt. This is where you’ll find Bistro LOFT, a place where good food, yoga and art come together. As soon as the sun comes out, it’s the perfect place to sit back on one of the benches outside, leaning against the church wall and soaking it all in.
BLEND ONE
On the edge of The Hague, just into Voorburg, you’ll find one of the nicest coffee spots we’ve ever been to: BLEND ONE. With award-winning coffee, delicious bakes, solid lunch options and plenty more, it’s basically the definition of an all-day café. Add to that a cosy setting, a sunny terrace and genuinely lovely people, and you’ll understand why it’s very hard to leave once you’re here.
Zwart Zaad
With a pick-your-own garden, food forest, farm shop and harvest fields, tuinderij WIJdehorst in Wassenaar feels like a true oasis. And right on this beautiful spot, you’ll find a great place for coffee (and something sweet): Zwart Zaad. Definitely worth the bike ride to Wassenaar. Once you sit down here, the city buzz fades away instantly. Expect a mix of cheerful day-trippers and loyal regulars. Trust us: you’ll want to join them.
Pompke
Right next to the Scheveningse Bosjes, on the Pompstationsweg, you’ll find the perfect pit stop during a walk or bike ride: Pompke. Fair warning though: once you’ve settled in and seen all the goodies you can order from the little service window, chances are your walk or ride won’t be continuing anytime soon…
Pluk
Tucked away on the edge of the city, in a lush green area with a native plant garden, vegetable garden and even animals, you’ll find Pluk in the Loosduinen district. This terrace is perfect for a great cup of coffee (made with beans from Roast Factory), paired with one of their tasty (vegan) cakes or pies. Bringing kids? They’ll be more than happy in the playground, so staying a bit longer for lunch is highly recommended.
De Boshut
Some places in The Hague are just made for lingering all afternoon. De Boshut Scheveningen, on the Badhuisweg, is definitely one of them. Ideally located right between forest and beach, it’s the perfect stop after a breezy walk along the sea or a wander through the Scheveningse Bosjes. Afterwards, you settle in here, cheeks still warm from the wind, face in the sun and simply enjoy.
SevenHouse
On the other side of the city, at Heeswijkplein in the Moerwijk neighbourhood, you’ll find another great coffee spot: SevenHouse. A trendy café where everyone feels welcome and where the many cultures of Moerwijk come together. The square has been beautifully redeveloped in recent years, making this terrace a lovely place to sit back and relax.
