De Lorenzo Ice Cream
In 1935, Italian founder De Lorenzo opened this ice cream parlor on a cozy corner of Fahrenheitstraat and Cederstraat. And now, ninety years later, De Lorenzo is still here—under new ownership, with a modern interior and a larger terrace, but still serving the same traditional family recipe for authentic Italian gelato.
One day, I’ll be an ice cream man!
That new owner is Matteo. For years, he lived right across from the shop. As a child, he would often stop by for a scoop (his all-time favorite: hazelnut with whipped cream). And little Matteo could only dream of one day owning De Lorenzo himself.
The business was first passed on to two Italian brothers, who later entrusted it to Matteo and his father, Robert. After an intense two-week gelato-making training—and a promise to uphold the authentic family recipe—they officially became the De Lorenzo ice cream men in 2009.
Treasured Ice Cream
De Lorenzo is one of the oldest ice cream parlors in The Hague, following close behind Florencia, which opened in 1932. Their traditional family recipe—handwritten in a secret recipe book—has remained unchanged and is still followed by Matteo today. “Our ice cream is so good because of this special recipe. Since we don’t use whipped cream or eggs, it’s light on the stomach, so you can easily enjoy a few extra scoops,” he explains. And we love that!
