Bites & coffees
Sometimes you just stúmble upon a great spot! The kind you instantly want to recommend to all your friends—but secretly think, “Hmm, maybe I should keep this one to myself.” But at Haagse Schatten, we’re not that selfish. We’re more than happy to share our discoveries with you. So let us introduce you to this hidden treasure: ‘t Spijshuisje.
From bridge keeper’s house to cozy food kiosk
On the edge of The Hague, right where Rijswijk meets Voorburg, you’ll find this former bridge keeper’s house from 1892—located right on the Vliet canal.
Once, a bridge keeper operated the Nieuwe Tolbrug here, a drawbridge for pedestrians and cyclists. Now? It’s a tiny kiosk where you can grab a cup of coffee and something sweet. Perfect for a stopover during a bike ride or a stroll with your dog.

Small but sweet
You’ll be surprised at what comes out of this tiny little hatch—just a few square meters in size! Not only freshly brewed coffee (made with beans from fellow treasure Brute Bonen), but also the most delicious cakes and tarts. All homemade by owner Arjenne—because believe it or not, there’s not even room for an oven inside this cute little house.
Arjenne always had a passion for baking and dreamed of becoming her own boss. So when she spotted this charming bridge keeper’s house for rent (on Marktplaats, of all places!), she seized the opportunity. And we’re so glad she did. Because this one-of-a-kind hotspot is now officially a The Hague treasure!
