The atmosphere is already great on the way there by bike: “We’re going to music class!” my daughter sings loudly for half an hour as we head to her first music lesson at ‘Music Monkeys.’ And we found plenty of musical monkeys at this new The Hague treasure.
I don’t need to tell you that the Zeeheldenkwartier is a wonderfully vibrant area on the edge of the city center. In every little street, you’ll find lovely local gems. One of those is located on Witte de Withstraat, where Josette’s music school and shop is based.
Together with my über-enthusiastic almost 3-year-old daughter, I sign up for a trial lesson on Friday morning. The tea and water jugs are ready, a large brown suitcase full of small instruments is invitingly placed on the big rug, and slowly, the youngest musical talents start to trickle in. Shoes and jackets off, and finding a spot on the soft rug.
Singing & Swinging
After all the children have been welcomed personally through a song and have found a spot on the rug with their accompanying dads and moms, the music class begins. Familiar children’s songs, fun music games, and songs without lyrics alternate throughout the session.
The youngest musicians are encouraged to dance, sing, and use the distributed instruments. While some watch carefully, others already show their inner performer. It’s beautiful to see! Josette pays attention to each child and manages to keep many of them engaged. English and Dutch alternate during the lesson due to the many expat kids.

And if the kids are really enthusiastic about an instrument and you’d like to continue their musical development at home, then you’ll find a variety of colorful instruments and music accessories for the little ones adorning the walls and shelves in the music room. Just a heads up: the shop is only open by appointment, so be sure to contact Josette in advance to avoid showing up at a closed door or during a lesson. My daughter has already added the light blue ukulele to her wishlist!
