A taste of culture for all ages

A unique spot on the ever vibrant Weimarstraat: De Regentes. A neighbourhood theatre that makes culture accessible to every resident of The Hague.

Tuesday 5 May 2026

Theater De Regentes had been on our The Hague treasure wish list for a long time, and for good reason. It’s such a unique place in the city, making culture accessible to a wonderfully diverse audience. To be honest, until a few years ago I didn’t know it all that well myself, apart from the stories my father used to tell, proudly recalling how he once took swimming lessons there…

Surprised and amazed

Now that I have young children of my own, I’ve truly discovered this lovely neighbourhood theatre on the lively Weimarstraat, which is full of The Hague treasures by the way. From weekly toddler concerts and preschool dance classes to their very first real theatre experience during the fantastic Krokuskabaal festival, Theater De Regentes is a place where both you and your children, well mine at least, instantly feel at ease. A place where they are surprised and amazed, and where afterwards you can unwind together with an apple juice and something tasty.

It’s a theatre deeply rooted in the community, removing many of the usual barriers of cultural institutions through its programming and accessibility. A true recommendation and truly one of a kind. A classic the Hague treasure.

From water to theatre

There’s plenty to experience at De Regentes not just for the youngest city residents. This theatre buzzes with energy for all ages, from French chansons to jazz festivals, and from flamenco performances to a full evening programme by De Règâhs. There really is something for everyone. My advice is to check their packed agenda regularly.

Curious to learn more about the building’s unique history? Then the “From Water to Theatre” tour might be just the thing for you. I’ll be sure to give my father a call right after this.
