Fun fact: Porte Reffe is a variation of the word ‘Porte Greffe’, which literally means ‘rootstock’. The American rootstock once saved European wine culture from decline. In the 19th century, European viticulture was ravaged by Phylloxera. This grapevine pest feeds on the roots of grapevines and posed a major threat to wine production in Europe. Can we have a round of applause for this rootstock? Thanks to them, we still get to enjoy wine!
